Does travertine actually need to be sealed?
Travertine is a limestone formed around mineral springs, and it is naturally full of voids and open pores. Left unsealed it absorbs almost everything that lands on it: sunscreen, wine, leaf tannin, iron from irrigation water, and the general grime that gets tracked in from a yard. Once a stain is down inside the stone rather than on it, removal gets much harder.
The other reason is structural, in a small way. Water sitting in open pores encourages the pitting and flaking that people call spalling, and around a salt pool it accelerates. A penetrating sealer reduces absorption without changing the look of the stone much at all. Most homeowners who seal travertine notice the maintenance difference before they notice any visual difference.

Why can you not use a regular paver sealer on travertine?
Because most concrete paver sealers are designed to build at least some film, and travertine has to breathe. Moisture moves up through natural stone from the setting bed below. If a film blocks that path, the moisture collects under the sealer and you get a cloudy white haze, and eventually flaking or peeling as the film loses its grip from underneath.
There is a color issue too. Some solvent based products yellow with UV exposure, which nobody notices on a dark charcoal paver and everybody notices on an ivory travertine deck. We use breathable penetrating sealers formulated for natural stone, so the stone can still release moisture while the pore is protected.
What is etching and can it be fixed?
Etching is a chemical burn, not a stain. Travertine is calcium carbonate, so anything acidic reacts with it and dissolves a tiny amount of the surface, leaving a dull spot that catches light differently. Spilled wine and citrus do it. So do many hard water and rust removers, and several off the shelf general purpose cleaners.
Light etching can often be improved by cleaning and sealing, because sealer restores some of the wet appearance and evens out how light reads across the surface. Deep etching is a physical loss of stone and it needs honing to correct, which is different work. This is the single biggest reason we do not use acid based products on travertine, and it is a common source of damage on decks that have been cleaned by someone treating stone like concrete.

How do you clean travertine without damaging it?
Neutral pH products and controlled pressure. Aggressive pressure blows out the soft filler in the voids of a filled travertine and opens the surface up permanently, and the damage is not reversible. We use a pH neutral cleaner suited to stone, let it do the work with dwell time rather than force, and surface clean at a pressure the stone tolerates.
Organic growth on a shaded travertine lanai or the north side of a pool deck gets a treatment that kills it at the root, again without acid. Where voids have opened up and the surface is pitting badly, filling is a separate service and we will tell you if the deck needs it before sealing rather than sealing over an unfinished surface.
Will sealing change how my travertine looks?
Less than most people expect, and that is usually the point. A penetrating sealer in a natural finish leaves travertine looking like travertine, slightly richer and more even, without gloss. On a pool deck that is what you want anyway, since travertine is often chosen precisely because it does not look coated.
An enhancing sealer is available if you want the deeper, wet color that the stone shows right after rain. It darkens the tone noticeably and it makes the variation in the stone more dramatic. It is a real choice with a real look, not a subtle one, so we sample it on your own deck in your own light before you commit. Once an enhancer is in the stone, changing your mind is difficult.
How does travertine hold up around a Sarasota pool?
Very well, which is why it is so common here. It stays cooler underfoot than most alternatives, and the tumbled surface gives decent wet traction on its own. The things that shorten its life are salt from a chlorine generator crystallizing in the pores, acidic cleaners used by mistake, and standing water in low areas that never gets a chance to evaporate.
Sealing addresses the first and third. It reduces how much salt water the stone takes in, and it slows the absorption that drives pitting. The second one is on the homeowner, so it is worth knowing that anything labeled for rust, hard water or mildew that does not specifically say it is safe for natural stone should stay away from your deck.
