Herringbone is the strongest paver pattern for a driveway, because the interlocking units transfer vehicle load sideways into their neighbors instead of letting the field creep. Running bond, basketweave and circle kits are appropriate for patios, lanais and walkways, where loads are lighter and appearance drives the choice.
Pattern is usually treated as a styling decision, and on a patio it mostly is. On a driveway it is structural. The way the units are arranged decides whether a tire load is shared across the field or shoved into one paver at a time.

Why is herringbone the right pattern for a driveway?
In a herringbone bond every unit is locked by its neighbors on multiple sides, and there is no continuous straight joint running in the direction of travel. When a tire pushes down and forward, that force gets distributed into surrounding pavers instead of moving one unit.
Compare that to running bond, where long continuous joints run across the field. Those joints are a line of weakness. A vehicle turning on the surface, especially with the wheel cranked while stopped, will walk the field along those joints over time. It happens slowly and it shows up as a wavy line or a spread edge.
Herringbone can be laid at 45 degrees or 90 degrees to the direction of travel. Both interlock. The 45 degree version is generally considered the strongest for vehicle areas and it produces the most angled perimeter cuts, which is the labor tradeoff.

What is the difference between 45 and 90 degree herringbone?
It is the same interlocking bond rotated. In a 90 degree herringbone the units run parallel and perpendicular to the edges of the field, so perimeter cuts are mostly square. In a 45 degree herringbone the whole pattern is rotated, so every perimeter unit is a diagonal cut.
Visually the 45 degree layout looks more dynamic and it draws the eye down the length of a driveway. The 90 degree layout reads more orderly and traditional, and it lines up cleanly with a soldier course border.
Practically, 45 degrees costs more in labor and in waste because of the cutting. If the budget is tight, a 90 degree herringbone still gives you the interlock, which is the part that matters structurally.
When does running bond make sense?
On patios, lanai floors and walkways, where the loads are foot traffic and furniture rather than vehicles. Running bond is the simplest pattern to lay, produces the least cut waste, and reads calm and contemporary, especially with large format units.
It is particularly good on large open patios where a busy pattern would feel restless, and on narrow walkways where a running bond down the length of the path avoids generating small cut pieces along both edges.
The one thing to plan for is that running bond needs a straight reference edge to work from. On an irregular space, the continuous joint lines make any out of square condition obvious, so the layout has to be set carefully at the start.

Where do basketweave and circle kits fit?
Basketweave is a traditional pattern of paired units alternating direction, and it suits older Sarasota homes and smaller patio spaces. It produces very little cut waste with square modules. It has less interlock than herringbone, which is fine for a patio and not appropriate for a driveway.
Circle kits are pre engineered fans of tapered units that build a circle, usually as a focal point under a dining table or around a fire feature. They look excellent and they create a lot of cutting where the circle meets the surrounding field, so the surrounding pattern has to be chosen to absorb that transition.
Both work best as a defined element inside a larger field rather than as the whole surface. A patio that is entirely circle kits ends up busy and expensive.
What does a soldier course or border actually do?
A soldier course is a single ring of units laid perpendicular around the perimeter of the field. It frames the pattern, gives the edge restraint a straight consistent line to work against, and absorbs the irregularity of a property line or a house wall so the field pattern stays clean.
On a driveway, a border in a contrasting color visually narrows a wide expanse and makes the whole surface look intentional. On a patio it defines the space.
It also makes future repairs easier. When the field has a defined border, lifting and resetting a section inside it is much less visually disruptive than working right up to an unframed edge.
Does the pattern affect cleaning, sanding and sealing?
Somewhat, and it is worth knowing before you choose. Patterns with more units per square foot have more linear feet of joint, which means more joint sand to place and more joint to maintain. A field of small units has considerably more joint than a field of large format ones.
More joint is not a bad thing. Joint sand is what creates interlock, and a properly sanded and sealed joint is stable. But it does mean re sanding a small unit herringbone driveway is more work than re sanding a large format running bond patio of the same size.
When we seal, the sealer hardens that joint sand so it stops washing out during storms. That benefit applies to every pattern, and it matters most on the patterns with the most joint.
