Paver installation in Sarasota starts with excavation, then a compacted limerock or crushed concrete base, a screeded bedding sand layer, the pavers themselves, edge restraint, plate compaction, and joint sand. Florida sand subgrade and a high water table mean base depth and compaction matter more here than the product brochure suggests.
We spend most of our year cleaning, re-sanding, repairing and sealing paver surfaces across Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice and Lakewood Ranch. That means we get called to a lot of hardscape that failed early. Sunken driveway aprons. Patio edges that spread out into the grass. Lanai fields that rock underfoot because the bedding sand washed into a void below.
Almost none of that is the fault of the paver. It is the base, the edge, or the water. When we install, we build for the failures we get paid to fix, because we know exactly what they look like ten years in.
How deep does the base actually need to be in Sarasota?
The honest answer depends on what drives or sits on the surface, and on what is under it. A screened lanai floor carries foot traffic on a slab or on stable subgrade, so it needs far less base than a driveway that takes a loaded pickup every day. A driveway in loose beach sand needs more than a driveway cut into older compacted fill.
As a general Florida build, we run four to six inches of compacted limerock or crushed concrete under walkways and patios, and eight to twelve inches under driveways and anything a vehicle touches. That base goes down in lifts, usually three to four inches at a time, and each lift gets compacted before the next one goes on. A single twelve inch dump compacted once from the top is not a twelve inch base. It is a crust over loose rock, and it will settle in ruts exactly where your tires sit.
We also compact the subgrade itself before any base material touches it. Sarasota sand looks firm when it is dry and moves when it is wet. If the ground under the base was never proofrolled, the whole assembly is riding on something that has not been tested.

What are the actual steps in a correct paver installation?
Layout and excavation come first. We mark the field, check fall away from the house, and dig to the depth the finished elevation requires. Getting this wrong at the start means either a lip at the garage or water running back toward the slab.
Then base placement and compaction in lifts. Then a screeded bedding layer, usually about one inch of clean concrete sand, struck flat with rails and never used to fix a bad base. Bedding sand is a setting bed, not a leveling course. If someone is using two or three inches of sand to smooth over a rough base, the surface will telegraph every low spot within two rainy seasons.
Pavers get laid off a string line, cut at the perimeter with a wet saw so the dust stays down and the edges stay clean, then locked in with edge restraint. We plate compact over the field with a protective pad, sweep in joint sand, and compact again so the sand seats down into the full depth of the joint instead of bridging near the top.
Why does the Florida water table change how pavers are built?
Water is the whole story here. In much of Sarasota County the water table sits close enough to the surface that a driveway excavation can find damp sand a foot down. Base material that stays saturated does not behave like base material. It loses its ability to spread load, and the paver field above it starts moving.
That is why the base has to drain and why the surface has to shed. Pavers are a permeable system in the sense that water gets into the joints, so the design has to give that water somewhere to go instead of parking it against the slab or under the middle of the field. We set slope during excavation, not by shimming with sand later.
Afternoon storm season makes this worse in a specific way. A summer downpour can dump more water in twenty minutes than a northern install sees in a week. A base that would be fine up north gets tested here every July.
Here is what happens before a single paver is set on your job
- We confirm finished elevations against your slab, garage lip and any door thresholds
- We set the fall so water runs away from the house and toward an outlet, not into a low spot
- We compact the subgrade and check that it holds before base material goes down
- We place base in lifts and compact each lift instead of compacting once from the top
- We run the base wider than the finished paver edge so edge restraint has something to bite
- We screed the bedding sand to a consistent depth rather than using it to hide base problems
- We cut perimeter pieces on a wet saw so the edges are clean and the dust stays out of the joints
- We compact the field, sweep joint sand, and compact again so the sand seats through the full joint
What is edge restraint and why do so many failures start there?
Edge restraint is the rigid border that keeps the outside row of pavers from moving sideways. Without it, the field slowly spreads. Joints open, sand washes out, and the perimeter pavers tip. You see it most often along driveway sides where the pavers meet turf or mulch.
Restraint has to be spiked into the compacted base, not into loose fill outside the base. This is a common shortcut, because the base was not run wide enough past the paver edge to hold a spike. We overbuild the base past the finished edge for this reason.
Where a driveway meets a road apron or a pool deck meets a coping line, the detail changes, and sometimes a concrete toe is the right call instead of plastic restraint. We decide that on site, not from a catalog.
Should new pavers be sealed right away?
Not immediately. New pavers release efflorescence, the white haze that appears as moisture pulls lime out of the concrete toward the surface. If you seal over that process, you can trap the haze under the sealer and it becomes much harder to correct.
We generally want a curing period, then a proper cleaning and an efflorescence treatment if any has surfaced, then joint sanding, then sealer. Sealing is not paint. It soaks in, hardens the joint sand, and locks the surface so the sand stops washing out during storms.
