Paver sanding is replacing the sand in the joints between pavers so the field locks together again. Joint sand washes out with storm runoff and irrigation, which lets weeds and ants in and allows pavers to shift. New sand is swept in, compacted to just below the paver chamfer, then either sealed so it hardens or installed as polymeric sand that sets on its own.
Joint sand is the least visible part of a paver surface and the part that fails first. It is also the part doing the most work. Sand in the joints is what transfers load between pavers so a driveway behaves as one interlocked field instead of a few thousand loose stones. When it goes, everything else follows: weeds, ants, rocking pavers, spreading edges.

What does joint sand actually do?
The whole idea behind a paver surface is interlock. Individual pavers are not glued or mortared down. They stay put because the sand packed between them transfers load sideways to their neighbors, so when a car tire presses on one paver, a dozen around it share the weight. That is why a properly sanded paver driveway can carry more than people expect.
Take the sand away and the interlock goes with it. Each paver starts moving independently, edges chip against each other, the field loosens, and the perimeter starts to creep outward. Most of the problems people describe as a paver installation going bad are really just joints that emptied out over a few years and were never refilled.

Why does the sand keep washing out here?
Volume and frequency of water. Sarasota gets intense afternoon storms through the summer, and a driveway or walk is a sloped surface, so every storm carries a little more sand downhill. You see the result as fan shaped deposits at the low end and along the street edge after a heavy rain.
Irrigation is the quieter cause. Sprinklers hitting a walkway or the edge of a driveway several times a week keep the joints permanently damp and slowly move material out. And there is a materials issue in older Sarasota installs, where the bedding and joint material is often a shell based sand that breaks down, packs differently and washes more readily than modern silica sand.
What is polymeric sand and do I need it?
Polymeric sand is joint sand with a binder mixed into it. You sweep it into the joints, remove every grain from the paver faces, then activate it with a specific watering sequence, and it cures into a firm joint that resists washout, weeds and ants on its own without needing sealer to harden it.
It is excellent in the right application and unforgiving in the wrong one. It needs joints of adequate depth, it needs the surface bone dry going in, and it needs the activation done correctly. Rain arriving mid install ruins it, which is a genuine consideration in a Sarasota summer. It can also haze the paver face if the sweeping is sloppy. We use it where it is the better answer, particularly around pool decks and constantly wet joints, and we use standard sand plus sealer elsewhere.
Signs your joints need sand before anything else
- Fans of sand across the driveway or in the street after heavy rain
- Joint sand sitting noticeably below the edge of the pavers
- Small sand mounds at the joints, which means ants are working
- Weeds sprouting from between pavers rather than at the edges
- Individual pavers rocking or clicking slightly underfoot
- The outer course starting to creep out into the grass or bed
- Sand ending up in the pool skimmer basket
- Chipped paver edges where stones are moving against each other
Why does the sand go in before the sealer?
Because the sealer is what hardens standard joint sand. It soaks down through the sand and cures, so the joint ends up behaving like a soft mortar rather than loose grit. That is what stops the washout, blocks the ants and gives weed seed nothing to root into.
Sand added after sealing sits loose on a hardened surface with nothing to bond it, and the first storm takes it. Every so often we get called to a property where a previous job went sand last, and the homeowner cannot understand why the joints emptied within months. The order is not a preference, it is how the system works.
How deep should the joints be filled?
To roughly an eighth of an inch below the top of the paver, which on most pavers means just below the chamfer, the small beveled edge along the top. Filled to that depth the joint is full enough to transfer load and shallow enough that the chamfer still reads as a clean line between stones.
Overfilled joints are a real problem, not a cosmetic one. Sand that sits up on the chamfer or across the paver face gets locked there by the sealer and leaves a permanent gritty haze. Underfilled joints leave the paver edges exposed to chipping and let the field move. We sweep, compact with a plate compactor where the surface calls for it, top up where the sand has settled, and check the depth before anything else happens.
Can you re-sand without sealing?
Yes, and there are situations where it is the sensible order of operations, for example if you are having other work done and want to wait on the finish. Polymeric sand in particular works as a standalone job, since it sets on its own without needing a sealer over it.
Standard sand on its own is a temporary fix though, and we will say so rather than take the work under false pretenses. Without sealer, that new sand starts washing out again from the next storm season onward, and you are back where you started in a year or two. If the plan is standard sand, sealing it is what makes the money worth spending.
