Failed sealer is one of the most common calls we take, and it is worth saying plainly: it is a normal repair, not an unusual disaster. Sealer failure happens for ordinary reasons. Why does paver sealer go cloudy or white?
The usual cause is moisture trapped under the film. If a sealer goes down on pavers that are not fully dry underneath, or rain lands on it before it has cured, the water gets caught in or below the finish and scatters light. That is what you are seeing as milky haze, blushing or a white cast. It often shows worse in the low areas and along a shaded edge where the pavers were slowest to dry.
In our climate that is easy to do accidentally. Humidity here means pavers hold moisture in the pore far longer than they look like they do, and summer storms arrive with less warning than a forecast implies. There is also a version caused by sealing over efflorescence, where the white lime bloom was locked under the finish before it had finished coming out of new pavers.

Why is my sealer peeling or flaking off in sheets?
That is a bond or thickness problem. Film forming sealers are designed to be applied at a specific coverage rate. Applied too heavily, or recoated repeatedly without ever stripping the previous layers, the film gets thick enough that it can no longer flex with the paver through Florida heat cycles, so it releases in sheets and curls at the edges.
The other cause is bonding to something other than the paver. If a surface was not cleaned properly, if old growth or a dusty residue was still present, or if a new product went over an incompatible old one, the finish is holding onto contamination rather than the stone. Either way the answer is the same: it has to come off before anything new goes on.
Can you fix it without stripping?
Sometimes, and we will tell you when that is the case, because a full strip is more work and more cost than a targeted fix. Very light hazing in a solvent based acrylic can occasionally be re opened with a solvent treatment that lets the trapped moisture escape and the film reflow. It is not a certainty and it depends entirely on the product that is down.
But when a finish is peeling, when there is heavy build up from years of recoating, when the haze is widespread, or when nobody knows what product was used, stripping is the honest route. Recoating over a failing film gives you a nice looking surface for a few months and then the same failure showing through, with an extra layer to remove later.
When stripping is the right answer instead of another coat

How does the stripping process work?
We test first. A small area gets treated so we can see how the existing finish responds and confirm the right stripper and dwell time, because the products on the market behave very differently. Then the stripper goes down across the field, gets the dwell time it needs, and the dissolved sealer is agitated and removed rather than driven into the joints.
Rinse control matters more than people realize. Stripped sealer suspended in water will re deposit into the joint sand and along the low edge if it is just hosed around, so we manage where that material goes and keep it off landscaping and out of a pool. After stripping, the pavers get a full clean, then a proper dry, then new joint sand, then the new sealer.
Will the pavers look different after stripping?
Yes, and briefly they will look worse, which is worth knowing in advance. Bare stripped pavers look flat and pale because everything that was giving them color, both the sealer and the accumulated haze, is gone. It is the most unattractive stage of the job and it lasts until the new sealer goes on.
There can also be shadowing where an old finish protected some pavers more than others, or where a stain sat under the film for years. We handle what we can with targeted stain treatment before resealing. The final result is a surface with one consistent finish instead of a patchwork, which is the whole point of doing it properly.
How do you keep the new sealer from failing the same way?
Dry time, weather discipline and coverage rate. We do not seal pavers that are still holding moisture, and in Florida humidity that generally means a full overnight after cleaning rather than a few hours in the sun. We watch the rain windows in summer and we move a seal date rather than gamble on one, because a redo costs everyone more than a delay does.
Then we apply at the coverage rate the product specifies. Not heavier, which is what causes peeling and hot tire pickup, and not stretched thin to save material, which is what causes early wear. Combine that with a proper strip so the new product is bonding to clean paver, and the finish behaves. That is what the 3 year warranty is built on.
