A concrete driveway in Sarasota needs a compacted subgrade, adequate thickness for vehicle load, and control joints spaced correctly so shrinkage cracks happen where you want them. Florida heat accelerates the set, so timing the pour and the finish matters, and sealing protects the surface from staining and UV.
Concrete is still the most common driveway surface in our area, and it is a perfectly good one when it is built and maintained properly. Most of the failed concrete we see failed for reasons that had nothing to do with the concrete itself.

What makes a concrete driveway last in Florida?
The same thing that makes a paver driveway last. What is underneath it. A compacted subgrade that does not move, with any soft or organic material removed rather than covered. Sandy subgrade that was never compacted will settle, and a slab bridging a settled area cracks.
Adequate thickness for the load comes next. A driveway carrying daily vehicle traffic is not the same slab as a garden shed pad, and thin pours crack at the wheel paths.
Then control joints. Concrete shrinks as it cures and it will crack. Control joints give it a planned place to do that. Joints spaced too far apart mean the slab picks its own crack line, usually across the middle of the most visible panel.

Why does concrete crack so predictably here?
Three local reasons dominate. Root pressure is the first. Sabal palm and ficus roots travel a long way and lift slabs from below, and once a slab is lifted on one side the crack is inevitable.
Water is the second. Sandy soil moves with water, and a slab over a washed out area loses its support. That shows up as a crack with one side lower than the other, which is different from a shrinkage crack where the two sides stay level.
Heat is the third, and it affects the pour itself. Florida sun accelerates the set, which shortens the working window for finishing and increases the risk of surface problems if the timing is off. A pour that starts too late in the day in July is a different job than the same pour in February.
Should I repair my concrete driveway or replace it?
It depends on whether the two sides of the crack are at the same level. Shrinkage cracks with no elevation change are cosmetic and are candidates for repair, cleaning and sealing. Cracks with one side higher than the other mean something moved, and until you know what moved, patching is temporary.
Widespread spalling, where the surface is flaking away, is a surface problem and can sometimes be resurfaced. Deep structural cracking across multiple panels usually means replacement or a paver overlay is the better spend.

What we look at on a concrete driveway before recommending anything
- Whether any crack has elevation change between the two sides
- Whether water stands anywhere on the slab after a storm
- How close large trees are and which direction their roots run
- The condition of the apron where the driveway meets the road
- Whether the slab is spalling at the surface or cracked through
- Garage threshold height, in case an overlay is on the table
- Existing staining, since that affects cleaning and sealing expectations
- Whether the property has an HOA architectural requirement for driveway finishes
Can pavers go over an existing concrete driveway?
Often, and it is one of the most requested projects we get, because it gives a tired concrete driveway a new surface without full demolition. The slab has to be sound, it has to drain correctly, and the added height cannot create a lip at the garage door or a problem at the road apron.
If the slab is cracked with elevation change, heaving from roots, or holding water, an overlay covers the problem rather than fixing it. In those cases removal and a properly built paver driveway is the better long term answer.

Why should a concrete driveway be sealed?
Concrete is porous. Oil, tire marks, leaf tannin, fertilizer and rust from irrigation water all soak in, and once they are in the pores they are difficult to remove. Sealing closes the surface so those things sit on top where cleaning gets them.
It also slows the surface degradation that comes from constant UV and from wetting and drying cycles. Gulf Coast sun is hard on unprotected concrete.
Concrete sealing is one of our regular services and it pairs naturally with concrete cleaning. If your driveway has gone gray and blotchy, a proper clean followed by sealing usually makes a bigger difference than people expect.
How does a concrete driveway compare to pavers here?
Concrete costs less up front in most cases and gives a continuous monolithic surface. Its weakness is that when it fails, it fails visibly and the repair shows. A patched panel rarely matches.
A paver field flexes, and an affected area can be lifted, the base corrected and the units reset with no visible patch. That matters on a lot with significant root pressure or on a property where utility access under the driveway is likely.
Both surfaces benefit enormously from cleaning and sealing, and both fail early if the base work was skipped. The base is the part of the decision people underweight.
