A Sarasota paver patio needs four to six inches of compacted base, about an inch of screeded bedding sand, edge restraint on every open side, and a slope that carries storm water away from the house. Patios take lighter loads than driveways, so pattern choice is mostly about appearance rather than structure.
A patio is where the base work is easiest to skip and where the shortcut shows up slowest. Foot traffic will not rut a thin base the way a truck will, so a badly built patio can look fine for two or three years before the low spots and the loose edges appear.

How much base does a patio really need in Florida?
Four to six inches of compacted limerock or crushed concrete is the normal range for a residential patio on stable subgrade. If the area was recently filled, if it sits over an old planting bed, or if the sand is loose and damp, we go deeper and we proofroll before we commit.
The subgrade is the part nobody sees and the part that decides everything. Sarasota sand feels solid dry and behaves very differently after a week of afternoon storms. We compact it and test it before base goes down.
Bedding sand stays at about an inch, screeded flat. It is a setting bed, not a leveling course. When we open up a settled patio and find three inches of sand under the pavers, we know what happened before we look at anything else.

Which direction should a patio slope?
Away from the house, always, and toward somewhere the water can actually go. A common problem we find is a patio that was built dead flat because flat looked correct to the eye. Then a summer storm dumps two inches in twenty minutes and it all sits against the slab.
We set fall during excavation. A modest, consistent slope is invisible to walk on and completely changes how the surface behaves in storm season. Water that runs off does not spend time working into the base.
Where a patio wraps a corner or meets a lanai floor, the fall has to be planned as one system rather than two separate slopes fighting each other.
What patterns and layouts work best for a patio?
Patios are where you get the most freedom, because you are not designing for vehicle load. Running bond reads calm and modern and works well with large format units. Herringbone gives a traditional look and still interlocks. Basketweave suits older Sarasota homes and smaller squares. Circle kits work as a focal point under a table or a fire feature.
The practical constraint is cuts. A busy pattern in a small or irregular space produces a lot of small perimeter cuts, and small cut pieces are the first ones to come loose. In tight spaces we often orient the pattern to give clean full units along the most visible edge.
We can also use a soldier course border, a single ring of units laid perpendicular around the perimeter. It frames the field, gives the edge restraint a straight line to work against, and hides irregularities in the property line.
Things worth deciding before we break ground on your patio
- Where the water will go once the patio covers that ground
- Whether the patio ties into an existing lanai floor or walkway elevation
- Whether you want a seat wall, a fire feature or planters built in the same excavation
- How furniture will sit on the surface, since chair legs find uneven joints fast
- Whether the space is shaded, which affects color choice and cleaning frequency
- Whether you want a wet look or a natural matte finish once it is sealed
- Where the hose bib and any future irrigation lines run under the field
How do you keep a patio from spreading at the edges?
Edge restraint spiked into the compacted base, and base run wider than the finished paver edge so those spikes have something solid to hold. On a patio the open edges usually meet grass or mulch, which offer no lateral support at all.
Without restraint, the outer row tips outward a little each season. Joints open, sand escapes, the second row follows, and eventually you have a ragged edge and a soft perimeter. It is slow and it is very common.
On patios that meet a planting bed we sometimes recommend a hard border instead, because mulch gets raked and washed away over time and takes the soil support with it.
Why do patio pavers get so dirty in Sarasota?
Shade, humidity and organic debris. Black algae and mildew colonize any surface that stays damp and does not get direct sun, and a patio under an oak or on the north side of a house is exactly that. Add pollen, leaf tannin and irrigation overspray and a light colored field goes dark fast.
Sealing slows this significantly. It closes the surface porosity so the growth has less to grip and makes routine cleaning much easier. It also hardens the joint sand so a pressure wash does not blow the joints out.
We do patio cleaning and sealing as our main line of work, so a patio we install stays with us for maintenance rather than becoming somebody else's problem.
Can you build a patio and a fire feature or wall at the same time?
Yes. Segmental block walls, seat walls and fire pit rings are hardscape work and we install them alongside patios regularly. Building them together is better than adding them later, because the base under a wall has to be designed for the wall load and it is much cleaner to do that in one excavation.
We build the block and stone portion of a fire feature. We do not run gas lines or electrical, so anything requiring a licensed gas or electrical trade gets coordinated with the appropriate contractor.
Wood burning or a self contained unit set into a block surround keeps the project inside what we do and keeps the timeline shorter.
