What makes a paver driveway hold up under vehicle load?
Depth and interlock. A driveway base is not the same as a patio base, and treating them the same is the single most common reason a driveway develops tire ruts within a few years. We build eight to twelve inches of compacted base under a residential driveway, placed in three to four inch lifts, with each lift compacted separately.
Then the laying pattern does real structural work. Herringbone interlocks the units so a tire load pushes against neighboring pavers instead of shoving one unit forward. Running bond looks clean on a patio but the continuous straight joints line up with the direction of travel, which lets the field creep. For anything a vehicle drives on, we recommend herringbone.
Finally, joint sand. Interlock only happens when the joints are full. Empty joints mean each paver is a loose block. We compact sand into the joints and we recommend sealing to harden that sand so storms stop pulling it out.

Why does the apron at the road matter so much?
The apron takes the sharpest loading on the whole driveway. Every vehicle turns there, sometimes with the wheel cranked while stopped, which is the worst case for a paver field. It is also the lowest point, so it collects runoff from the entire driveway and from the street.
We build the apron deeper than the field, run the base well past the visible edge, and often set a concrete toe rather than relying on plastic restraint alone. If your existing driveway is dipping anywhere, check the apron first. That is usually where it starts.

Can you replace a cracked concrete driveway with pavers?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Concrete cracks in Sarasota for predictable reasons. Sabal palm and ficus roots lift slabs from below. Sandy subgrade washes out under one corner. Control joints were spaced too far apart on a hot pour.
The advantage of pavers on a lot with root pressure is that a paver field flexes and can be lifted and reset in a section. A cracked slab has to be sawcut and replaced. We remove the old concrete, haul it off, and rebuild the base properly rather than laying over rubble.
If the slab is genuinely sound and the elevations work, an overlay is possible. We will tell you honestly which situation you have.
Signs your existing paver driveway needs attention before it gets worse

How do you keep water from running toward the garage?
By setting the fall during excavation. This sounds obvious and it is skipped constantly, because it is easier to lay pavers flat and hope. We check the garage threshold, the slab elevation and the street elevation before we dig, then grade the base to carry water away from the house.
Sarasota summer storms make marginal drainage obvious fast. If water pools anywhere on a paver field, it is finding its way into the base and taking bedding sand with it. A puddle that dries in an hour is still moving material every single time it forms.

What paver styles work best for a driveway?
Thickness matters more than shape. Driveway rated units are made for vehicle load, and using a thin patio paver on a driveway is a shortcut you will notice. Beyond that, most rectangular units and many tumbled styles are appropriate.
Color is a lifestyle decision in this climate. Lighter fields stay cooler and hide the fine white dust that blows around here. Darker fields show algae less in shaded areas but read hotter in full sun. Blends hide staining better than a single flat color.
We can bring samples and show you what the color actually does once it is sealed, because a sealer changes the look considerably. A wet look finish darkens and saturates the color. A natural matte finish keeps it close to the dry appearance.
How do you maintain a paver driveway in this climate?
Keep the joints full and keep the surface sealed. Those two things prevent most of the problems we are called about. Sand in the joints is what makes the field act as one surface. Sealer hardens that sand and slows the washout.
Beyond that, watch for oil drips and treat them quickly, and keep an eye on any spot that starts holding water after a storm. A dip that is a quarter inch this year is a two inch dip in three years, and it is much cheaper to reset a small area early.
