Pool deck resurfacing replaces the walking surface of an existing deck without demolishing the whole structure. In Sarasota the common approach is a paver overlay on a sound concrete slab, with attention to height at the coping, the screen enclosure kick plate and door thresholds, plus a sealer suited to chlorine or salt exposure.
A lot of Sarasota pool decks are original concrete that has done its twenty years. Stained, chalky, cracked in a few places, uncomfortably hot, and slick where the shade keeps it damp. Tearing the whole thing out is disruptive and expensive.
Resurfacing gives you a new walking surface over the existing structure when the existing structure deserves to stay. The judgment call is whether it does, and that is what we look at first.
When is resurfacing the right call and when is it not?
Resurfacing works when the slab is structurally sound, when it drains away from the pool and the house, and when adding height does not break something. If those three are true, an overlay gives you a completely new surface for less money and less disruption than full replacement.
It is the wrong call when the slab has settled or is heaving. A slab lifted by sabal palm or ficus roots is going to keep moving, and a beautiful new surface on top of it will crack or open at the same line. Same for a slab with an active drainage failure. Covering a problem is not fixing it.
We tell you which situation you are in after walking it, checking the fall with a level, and looking at where the existing cracks run. If it needs replacement we will say so.

What height problems does an overlay create?
Adding a paver layer raises the deck, and around a pool there are several fixed heights it has to respect. The coping is the big one. If the field comes up level with or above the coping, water sheets into the pool and the edge detail stops reading correctly.
Then the screen enclosure. The aluminum kick plate at the base of the cage sits at a fixed height, and a raised deck can eat into it. Then door thresholds at the house, and any existing step, which becomes shorter by the thickness of the overlay. A step that was already shallow can end up as a trip hazard.
We measure all of these before we quote. Discovering the height problem after demolition is how projects go sideways.
What are the resurfacing options for a concrete pool deck?
A paver overlay is the option we do and the option we recommend, because it gives you a genuine hardscape surface with individual units that can be lifted and reset later if anything needs access or repair. A coated or textured overlay is a coating on the same slab, which means it inherits whatever the slab does next.
Travertine over a sound slab is very common here and popular for the way it stays cooler underfoot. Concrete pavers give you more color and size choice at a different price point.
If the slab has to go, we can also remove it and build a proper new paver deck from the subgrade up, with compacted base, screeded bedding and edge restraint.

How do you handle drainage during a resurface?
This is the part of the job with the most long term value and the least visual payoff. A resurface is your one convenient chance to correct fall. If the deck currently pushes water toward the house or holds a puddle in one corner after every storm, we want to build that correction into the new surface.
Sometimes that is achievable within the overlay thickness. Sometimes it needs a deck drain or a modified layout. Occasionally the existing slope is so wrong that the honest answer is removal and rebuild.
Sarasota summer storms will find every flat spot. Water that stands on a deck is water working into whatever is below it.
How long does a pool deck resurface take and can we use the pool?
Most residential pool deck resurfacing runs a matter of days. Demolition, if any, and prep take a share of that, and cutting around cage posts slows things down on enclosed decks.
The pool itself generally stays full, but access is restricted while we work and while sealer cures. We plan the sequence so you are not cut off from the house, and on larger properties we can phase the work so part of the deck stays usable.
Storm season affects the schedule honestly rather than conveniently. Sealer cure in particular needs a dry window, and we would rather move a day than rush a cure.
What finish should a resurfaced pool deck have?
For a pool deck we almost always want traction additive in the sealer. A wet look gloss around a pool without it can be genuinely slick, and that is a safety issue rather than a preference.
Beyond that, a natural matte finish keeps the surface close to its dry appearance and is more forgiving of future repairs. A wet look deepens the color and gives the deck a richer, finished appearance, at the cost of showing any replacement unit more clearly.
